If you were to watch of movie of people's lives, these five characteristics would be illuminated in their successes or failures - over and over again. For some, these traits come naturally.  For others, they may take years to learn, or they may never learn them at all - without education or coaching.

But here is the good news: these traits can be learned! And, it's a proven fact that by embracing them and making these five "habits of successful people" a part of your being, you WILL achieve success in your personal life.

There are many people who have overcome obstacles and became successful. Whether consciously or subconsciously, it's a certainty that they accomplished this success by applying these 5 habits of successful people.

Note: These success secrets are relevant for success in relationships, family and friends, business, sports, investing.... you name it!




Success Secrets #1:  "No" Usually Means "I Don't Get It"

Whether you're trying to convince someone to vote for you or you're trying to sell them a fishing rod - it's critical that the potential "buyer" or listener clearly understands what you're offering.  More importantly, it's imperative that you understand their needs, desires and problems in order to give them what they want.  You can't solve a problem if you don't know what it is.

Typically, when someone doesn't understand what they're being offered or told, it's because they don't have the necessary information on which to base a decision.  So, their natural response is to say "no" to the offer.  This is because many people don't want to admit: "I don't get it" and appear foolish or unintelligent.  So, to avoid embarrassment, they will simply reject the proposal or offer.

So, one of the habits of successful people is realizing that the word "no" is often a natural response to confusion or missing information. So, they make it their mission to provide the listener or buyer with all of the necessary information, in a form they can understand, in order to make an educated and hopefully, positive decision.




Success Secrets #2:  You Can't Read Other People's Minds

Your thoughts control your results. It's true of everybody. But, many people are held back or unsuccessful in certain aspects of their lives because they make assumptions or believe things to be true without actual proof. This often happens subconsciously.
 
These assumptions can limit a person's recognition of tremendous opportunities that surround them every day.  This affects the choices they make, the actions they take, and can severely limit the success that they could attain.

Example:  A gentleman is interested in a lady friend and would like to ask her out to dinner.  However, he repeatedly passes up opportunities to do so, because he feels that she will decline.  Perhaps he has experienced rejection in his past.  But now, he is assuming that this lady friend and perhaps 'all' women will react the same way to his invitation.  He's afraid of risking embarrassment and what others might think about him. So, to protect his self-esteem, he does nothing, without ever knowing the true end result.

One of the traits of successful people is that they realize that just because one situational outcome occurred in the past, doesn't mean that same outcome will continue forever into the future.

It's a fact: people sometimes do say "no". But sometimes they also say "yes". Successful people recognize that they can't read other people's minds or predict their responses, so they proceed toward their goals without prejudging the outcome. Because they program their minds to focus on their goals and desired outcomes as top priority, their concern for embarrassment is overridden and they forge ahead. Obviously, this greatly increases their chances of success. Because, if they focused instead on fear of embarrassment, they would avoid the situation altogether - making their chances of success "zero".

We'll talk more about how to "program" your mind to focus on goals vs. negative outcomes in Success Secrets #4 below. But first, read Success Secrets #3.


Success Secrets #3:  Great Ideas Are Worthless Without Motivation & Action

Have you ever had a great idea about an invention or concept that really seemed to make perfect sense? It's a very common occurrence.  I'll use my son's idea from about 10 or 12 years ago as an example.  He said: "Daddy, why don't people's houses have clickers like your car?"  What he meant was: "Why don't we have the same technology to open the front door of our house as our car does with the keychain 'thingey'?" 

Most of us have had situations like this where we said: "I thought of that!".  But, did you take action?  Well, the successful people among us DO take action. 

Important note: most successful people often fail several times before they achieve success. In fact, on average, they fail at least 3-5 times before they land on a winner.


Going back to my own son's example. It started with an inspired concept or idea. Next, came 'the dream' or 'visualization of the outcome'. Now, think of your own experience. Do you or have you ever had a concept, song, invention, etc. that you've mulled over? 

If the answer is "yes" (and most of the time it is) -- to achieve success with it, you have to ask yourself at this point:  "How far am I willing and able to go?". Can you visualize what great opportunities are ahead of you if you just take one more "baby step" towards attaining your dream?

The key to attaining success with any idea is to build "momentum".


Building momentum is easier than you might think. It starts with taking a first baby step toward your dream or goal, followed by another, then another. Don't try to tackle it all at once. Break it down into very small pieces. For example: just go online and "Google" a description of your idea & print out the first page of results that Google returns. That's a baby step! The next day, you might explore one or two of the results that your printed out from Google and so on.....

The key to building momentum is to just  get your sled moving up the slope. (Taking action!)
 

Successful people aren't necessarily smarter or have better ideas, they simply understand that taking action is associated with momentum.

Once you take action and your sled crests the top of the slope, gravity will take over and your sled will begin to glide toward your goals. Now you're experiencing "momentum"!



Success Secrets #4: Focus On Positive Thoughts Not Negative Ones


If you watch or read the news it's usually pretty negative - because that's what sells. And on a personal level, it's much easier for your mind to fall into a negative emotional trap of fear, doubt and low self esteem than it is for optimism, belief in one's self and confidence.

Have you ever heard the saying: "be careful what you wish for, you might surely get it"?
 
This is another way of describing a 'self-fulfilling prophecy'.

This simply means that what you focus on with your mind is actually "subconscious goal-setting". If you think about negative things, some of those things are likely to occur.  On the other hand, if you think about positive things, some of those are likely to occur as well. Don't take my word for it, numerous research studies have been conducted to confirm this.

One of the key traits of successful people is they recognize the power of positive thinking. They form a mental image of the outcome or goal that they desire. Subconsciously, their minds begin to formulate ideas and plans to help them obtain their goals.

This ties in very closely with "building momentum" by taking baby-steps as discussed in Success Secrets #3 above. The first baby-step here is: consciously thinking of your desired outcome or goal. This enables the brain to subconsciously begin working on ways to make that desired outcome happen. This is what the term "brainstorm" is all about. In this case though, it is "programmed brainstorming" In other words, you can consciously program or "key-in" your desired outcome by focusing on it. Your brain will take over from there, behind the scenes, as you go about your day.

To truly harness this powerful tool of "programmed" brainstorming, I suggest that you write down one important dream or goal that you have been mulling over - perhaps for years. Whether you currently believe it's possible right now doesn't matter at all. Just write it down on a sticky note. Then, put the sticky note with your written goal someplace where you'll see it at least once a day (bathroom mirror, refrigerator, computer, etc.).

I'm sure you've heard this suggestion before, right? The difference has to do with what you learned in Success Secret #3 above: break your goal down into baby-steps. If your goal is to lose 20 lbs. by a certain date, don't immediately go on a crash diet and join a gym or run a marathon - or all of the above! Instead, maybe you'll just decide to do one form of exercise each day. This could be simply taking a walk or doing a few sit-ups at first. Each baby-step needs to be something that's easy to do and very achievable.

From personal experience, I can tell you that you'll find by just getting the process started, your motivation will build daily - but you have to focus on your goal (read your sticky note!).

The hardest part is always just getting started! Then, by taking small, achievable baby steps consistently, you will build confidence and belief about achieving your goal. (Remember "momentum" in #3 above?)

Just keep your sled moving up the slope. (Taking action!)

As your confidence builds, momentum will take over. What I mean is: you'll find yourself wanting to do more. With that, your mind will kick into overdrive to help you toward your goal. That's a good thing, but....

CAUTION: Don't overdo it! If you go overboard, especially early on, you will short-circuit the process and likely fail. So, just continue to take one baby-step at a time and build on it a little at a time, keeping it simple and achievable. This is critical. You must keep your confidence level high by making it easy to accomplish each baby-step towards your goal. Many people crash right here and this is why many people don't achieve their dreams and goals before. They try to do too much, too fast and self-destruct.

Hopefully, you now see the power of focusing on your desired outcome & positive thoughts and how you can program your mind to achieve your goals. On the flip side, I hope you also see how your mind can work against you if you focus on problems and negative thoughts.

Does this mean that successful people never consider problems? Of course not! However, they do this differently than most people.

Successful people don't focus on their problems. Instead, they focus on their goals and consciously consider possible roadblocks or problems they might have to overcome or avoid in order to achieve their goals. See the difference?

Successful people "hope for the best and plan for the worst". They don't let negative thoughts control them and throw them off their target. Instead, they use what they think about and focus on as tools in achieving their goals.



Success Secret #5: Success Is In Attention To Details


One of the critical things that sets successful people apart
is that they pay close attention to details. Most people don't like to get involved with "the minutia" or "detail work" - such as paperwork and forms, filing, budgeting, etc. (I can relate.)

You've probably heard the saying: "the devil is in the details". Though I don't think that literally means that details are the devil's work, sometimes I wonder if he (or she) doesn't inspire some of them....

Note:  Successful people don't necessarily like the minutia either. But one of the key habits of successful people is that they make sure the details are taken care of because they know that this can be the difference between success, mediocrity or failure. Attention to details allows successful people to be in tune with their family's or business' pulse. It allows them to respond before a minor detail or issue become a BIG problem.

Whether you're running a business or running a triathlon, a tiny adjustment somewhere within the race can make the difference between winning and losing. Attention to details before and during the race allows you to plan for and make necessary adjustments. And successful people get that!
